Scholarships and Tuition-Free Education in Sweden

In 2011, higher education in Sweden ceased to be free for EVERY student, but it remained free for citizens of Sweden, the EU/EEA, and Switzerland. Government funding is used to operate these institutes. Few universities are permitted to charge students tuition fees that are not covered by the grant.

The tuition for an overseas student varies based on the school, the degree of study, the location, and other factors. These factors might add up to 8000 EUR or more every year.

The Swedish government, which recognizes that although these costs are lower than those charged by American schools, they can still be a major issue, has established a number of completely and partially funded scholarship programs to assist eligible foreigners in receiving benefits as well.

When should/can I begin applying for admission to a Swedish higher education institution?

Sweden has a two-round admissions procedure, which means that applications are accepted in two different sessions, the first and second for the respective Autumn and Spring semesters.

While the Spring semester starts in January and runs until mid-June, the Autumn semester starts at the end of August and ends in the middle of January.

The first round of admission is when all courses taught in English are open for enrollment, so international students are urged to apply during this time.

The deadlines and admission decisions are also sooner (often in April), so you’ll know your status earlier before classes resume in August. Additionally, you’ll have plenty of time to organize additional details like lodging, resident permissions, etc.

Please keep in mind that all Masters scholarships are only available to students who begin their semester in the autumn. You must not miss the first round of admission if you wish to be considered for these scholarships.

When Should I Apply for the First Round of Admission?

The application date for the first round of admission into Sweden Schools is normally in mid-January, with the second round in mid-August.

If you are still a secondary school student, you should apply for the forthcoming Autumn semester because the Spring Semester (application in August) will not benefit you.

Waiting until the second round or missing the first round of admission means you’ll obtain mostly Swedish-taught courses and a few English-taught courses from universities seeking to achieve their annual admittance quota.
