Tips to get student accommodation

  • Always stay in touch with your university, if you have any questions about the accommodation.
  • You must be aware of all pending expenses, including electricity, water (potable and for washing), internet, transportation, laundry and others.
  • Check the contract carefully so that you are aware of all the expenses and the rules of the house.
  • Take your time! You can not select the place where you will live immediately. Start your search in advance so you can get the place that best suits you!

Accommodation within the campus

Dorms are frequently the most affordable and convenient option for college students. Many universities have international student dormitories where they can share their experiences as foreigners in China. In many universities, you can choose between a single room and a room shared by two or more people. Showers and private bathrooms may be connected to a room or a bathroom shared with other residents of your apartment. However, the majority of the bedrooms do not have kitchens, but there is a larger cafeteria in the building where students can purchase food.

Prices vary by university, with some rooms costing as little as 800 yen, or 86 yen, for the entire academic year. Make sure to ask your university for more information, because some students must pay for water and electricity, while others do not.

Private apartments

Regardless of where you study, you almost always have the option of renting your own apartment. Because China is such a large country, prices vary depending on where you want to study. The average monthly rent in downtown Beijing is 7.185 yen, or 770 yen. In larger cities, such as Shenyang, the same type of apartment would cost 1525 yen per month, or about 165 yen.

Please contact your university before looking for a private apartment to see if this is the best option for you. While renting an apartment may be preferable to sleeping quarters, you won’t know as many people, and it may be more difficult if you don’t speak Chinese.
