The multi-million rand full-mission Ship Handling Simulator will be used by students during the various training courses. The Maritime School of Excellence satellite campus in Durban has this technology installed. It is employed to train Marine Pilots and Tug Masters, bringing them up to pace with the International Standards Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) criteria and honing their abilities with refresher training.

In addition, the MSoE has Terminal Operations Simulators, RTG Crane, as well as the Ship-to-Shore Container crane will provide learners the real-time ability to operate, manoeuvre and familiarise themselves on all terminal related equipment and machinery.

Additional simulators such as Reach Stacker, Counter Balance, Mobile Harbour Crane, Rail Mounted Gantry, Straddle Carrier and Truck handling Simulator will be available to add to the elite training provided by the Maritime School of excellence.

The learning and employment opportunities that the MSoE will create for not only Transnet but also for the industry, South Africa and the maritime industry, aligns closely to the deliverables of the Market Demand Strategy.

Requirements | Transnet Graduate Trainee Program

Operator: Lifting Equipment (OLE)

Roles

As an OLE you will be focusing on supporting Port and Terminal operations.

Qualification, Skills and Experience

  • Grade 12 (matric) with Mathematics and Physical Science,
  • Code 8/EB driver’s license valid for at least three years,
  • Computer literate,
  • Be physically fit and healthy,
  • Be prepared to work shifts and in adverse weather conditions,
  • Pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination, which will include an assessment of hand-eye coordination, depth perception and the ability to work at heights.
  • A technical certificate knowledge N1-N6 will be an added advantage.

Skipper Port Operations (SPO)

Roles

As an SPO, you’ll be in charge of a vessel over 25 tons, but less than 200 tons, in a port operations area.

Qualification, Skills and Experience

  • Grade 12 (matric) with mathematics and physical science,
  • pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination.

Marine Motorman Grade II (MMG)

Roles

 As a MMG, you’ll undertake maintenance, repairs and servicing of engines and auxiliaries on board a vessel in a port operations area, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer.

Qualification, Skills and Experience

  • Grade 12 (matric) with mathematics and physical science,
  • An EGPR/GPR (general purpose rating),
  • Pass a pre-entry examination and a medical examination, and​
  • Be physically fit and healthy.

External candidates that wish to apply for those courses that are open to the private sector are required to contact the Maritime school of Excellence’s Learner Administration department to enroll on the relevant course.
