Applications are welcomed from suitably qualified applicants for the Kochi University of Technology (KUT) Special Scholarship Program (SSP) 2026 for International Students who want to pursue a doctoral degree in Japan.
The Special Scholarship Program (SSP) was established in 2003 to support advanced research at KUT by engaging highly capable students, especially from foreign countries, in cutting-edge research projects. Selected doctoral students pursue their course in English while working as research assistants (RAs).

Eligibility Criteria | Kochi University of Technology (KUT) Special Scholarship Program 2026
- Must hold or be scheduled to acquire a master’s degree before enrollment.
- Must be 35 years old or under at the time of enrollment.
- Must have an excellent academic record and strong degrees from reputable universities.
- Must demonstrate intention, adequate knowledge, and research skills to work in a designated project.
- Must have high English proficiency (program taught in English).

The application deadlines depend on the enrollment period:
- For April 2026 Enrollment: September 2025
- For October 2026 Enrollment: March 2026
Scholarship Benefits
- Full tuition exemption (entrance exam, enrollment, and tuition fees).
- Monthly stipend: 150,000 yen for living expenses.
- Travel & initial living costs: 150,000 yen (for international applicants residing outside Japan).
- Work as a Research Assistant (RA) for 50 hours/month.
- Maximum duration: 3 years (renewed annually based on performance).

How to Apply for Kochi University of Technology SSP 2026
- Choose a maximum of two supervisors from the SSP Supervisor List
- Send a complete Online Pre-Application Request to your preferred supervisor via KUT Online Pre-Application Request Form and obtain his/her permission to apply for the SSP program. Applicants are not allowed to make pre-application requests to more than two supervisors in a given entry period. Please note that your pre-application is considered rejected if your preferred supervisor does not reply to you within two weeks from the submission of the Online Pre-application Request Form.
- When your preferred supervisor contacts you, you must respond promptly.
- When you obtain permission from the supervisors, choose only one preferred supervisor, complete all required documents, and submit them to KUT by post. The documents must reach KUT by the deadline.
