This scholarship aims to support students from Africa in pursuing their postgraduate studies at the University of Essex. Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the University of Essex Africa Postgraduate Scholarship, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • These scholarships are restricted to students who are overseas fee payers and are entirely self-funded (Students receiving a repayable loan to fund their studies will be considered as self-funded).
  • Students must be ordinarily resident (see below for the definition of ordinary residence) in a member state of the African Union.
  • Applicants must have been awarded an undergraduate degree (this includes integrated Masters degrees) with the grade specified or above. A higher Masters grade cannot be taken to compensate for a lower Bachelors grade;
  • Students must register at the University of Essex in October 2024 or January 2025 for the first year of a full-time Masters course in academic year 2024-25 only, leading to the degree of: MA, MSc, LLM, MRes, MPP, MBM
  • These scholarships may be awarded to applicants who have completed relevant school or university studies in one of the specified countries above.
  • The award cannot be held in conjunction with any other University of Essex scholarships. Students who are eligible for this award and are joining Essex through a link agreement, which includes a discounted fee, will receive the award which is greater in value.
  • This scholarship is available for the first year of Masters study at Essex only;
  • Successful applicants should be available for promotional activities.

Country Specific Requirements

  • Ghana: 2:1, or CGPA 3.0/4.0 or above
  • Nigeria: CGPA 3/5 or above
  • Other member states of the African Union: 2:1 or above (or equivalent as defined by our Postgraduate Admissions selection criteria)

How to Apply for Africa Postgraduate Scholarship

The scholarship is provided at the time of admission, thus no application is required. If students meet the eligibility requirements, they will be automatically evaluated for the scholarship. Your eligibility will be determined by the academic transcripts and certificates that you submit with your application for a place at Essex.
